| From four to ninety-four, people of all ages and abilities can play the game. Bowling is great in this respect and has one of the highest levels of participation of all sports across the world. Like other sports, though, as your technique gets better and you get more competitive, the "Mental Game" becomes as important if not more important than your state of the art bowling balls and gear. |

Focus is important in this crunch situation:
You are live on National TV, you need to make the shot and, so, the fans of your opponent will sit quietely while you make your shot - Not! They will shout, stamp and wave brightly coloured objects specially designed to distract you.
These are three of "The Four-C's", the other being the Committment needed to reach high levels of your sport: while the never-give-up attitude does come into play during competition committment is more about the build up prior to competition. As much as some people think there is such thing as a free lunch and success does not come easy, it requires hours of practise, dedication and carefully designed training plans.
SUMMARY:
These intense high-pressure situations and stay-cool skills of high level athletes are not unique to Basketball, Football, etc.. Indeed they are common to all sports including bowling. That's why bowling, like the other sports, teaches The Mental Game as an essential part of any quality coaching program. |

WATCH HOW THE PROS DO IT:
One of the best ways to develop good habits is to videotape the pros on TV. Then watch and rewind, watch and rewind. Examine their style and notice how they hold the bowling ball, approach the foul line, release the bowling ball, how they slide with their bowling shoes, whether they turn their hand or not, and all the rest. You will notice that they have developed good habits and are very consistent with their bowling form. You can do the same with a little practice at your nearest bowling alley. So go ahead and bowl, it's a lot of fun, even if your scores aren't where you would like them to be. |
